New sci-fi and science reads for April 2021

I’m back with some scintillating science and a feast of fiction, including new releases for Murderbot and Wayfarers fans!

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells
Yes–Murderbot is back in another murder mystery with plenty of snarky humor. Fans expecting a follow-up to Network Effect may be slightly disappointed, as this novella takes place in an earlier timeline, but it’s still sure to be a fun read.

Beyond: The Astonishing Story of the First Human to Leave Our Planet and Journey into Space by Stephen Walker
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight, this extensively researched book includes eye-witness accounts from scientists and engineers involved in the mission and evokes the tension and excitement of the Space Race during the Cold War years. A must-read for space fans, old and new!

The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
This is book 4 in the much-loved Wayfarers series, each with different characters but set in the same universe. The series is notable for its rich characterization and intricately-drawn alien species. Plus fabulous cover art from one of my favorite sci-fi/space artists Chris Doll!

First Steps: How Upright Walking Made Us Human by Jeremy DeSilva
Paleoanthropologist DeSilva incorporates science, history, and culture as he examines the pros and cons of our species’ unique bipedalism and our seven-million-year journey towards life on two feet.

The House of Styx by Derek Künsken
The first in a brand-new series from the Canadian sci-fi author of The Quantum Evolution books. Centered around Québécois settlers living in the atmosphere of Venus, this has plenty of action as well as touching on some serious themes, and would be a good pick for Expanse fans.

The God Equation: The Quest for a Theory of Everything by Michio Kaku
A new book by this well-known theoretical physicist is always of interest. I previously read Hyperspace. Here, he continues the quest to unify relativity and quantum theory and provides an accessible overview of the journey so far.

The Last Watch by J.S. Dewes
The universe is collapsing, and humanity’s outcasts are its only chance for survival. Fast-paced, character-driven, sci-fi action with plenty of humor in the first installment of a new series called The Divide.
