Happy Birthday, Hector! Celebrating 5 years as an indie author

My very first book, Dead Reckoning And Other Stories was released five years ago today!

There’s a little bit of everything in there: military sci-fi, time travel, fantasy–and Elvis! Not to mention the insane adventures of Hector Tren-Hump (“Toward the end of Dead Reckoning I was rooting for the bad guy!” said one reviewer.) If you’ve never had the chance to get to know Hector and cronies, you can grab a copy for 99c until August 3rd.

This also means it’s five years since I began my own no less crazy adventures as an indie author. Thank you to everyone who has read my books, taken the time to leave a review, or offered advice and support along the way.

And a special shout-out to Christina McMullen whose help was invaluable as I was floundering helplessly in the murky waters of indie publishing in those early days. (I still flounder, just not quite so violently.)

So five years on, what have I learnt?

  1. Short stories don’t sell too well 🙂
  2. Love writing, hate editing.
  3. This working for yourself thing is hard work! But… I never forget that I’m incredibly lucky to be able to get up every day and do something I’m passionate about.

What will the next five years bring? I’m the world’s worst planner, but you can expect Joe Ballen book 4 next year, more adventures for Logan, plus a brand new sci-fi comedy crime caper series (need to work on the marketing for that one :-)) coming later this year. I also hope to be back on the comicon circuit… next year?…. maybe?

So lots to look forward to. Thanks to everyone who has shared the journey with me so far!
